Why Elevators Are Safer Than Stairs: How the Machine That Defies Gravity Became the Safest Way to Travel (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798188600136)

Statistically, the elevator is one of the safest ways to travel ever devised, far safer than the stairs beside it. Yet many of us feel a flicker of unease as the doors close. How did a machine that dangles us in the air on a cable become so extraordinarily safe?

Edward Callenford lifts the lid on the elevator: the ingenious safety brake that made skyscrapers possible, the counterweights and gearing that make lifting a full car almost effortless, the sensors and controllers that shuffle crowds through a busy tower, and the layers of redundancy that mean a snapped cable is a myth, not a menace. He also explores how elevators quietly shaped the modern city, turning the top floor from the servants' quarters into the penthouse.

Clear, reassuring, and full of original diagrams, this book reveals the hidden brilliance inside a machine you trust with your life every single day.
