Why Was Jesus Transfigured?: A Rubric-Based Evaluation of the Major Interpretations in the Synoptic Gospels (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798187349876)

The Transfiguration of Jesus is one of the most profound and mysterious events in the New Testament, recorded in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. On a high mountain, Jesus is transfigured before Peter, James, and John-his face shining like the sun, his clothes dazzling white, Moses and Elijah appearing beside him, and a divine voice declaring, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."

This book by P.C. Anderson offers a groundbreaking, rubric-based evaluation of the major interpretations of the Transfiguration. Rather than relying on impressions or devotional tradition, Anderson applies a nine-variable framework to test each hypothesis against the biblical text, its literary context, and broader canonical theology. Each interpretation-whether emphasizing Jesus' divine glory, strengthening the disciples before the Passion, fulfilling Kingdom promises, confirming Moses and Elijah's witness, or previewing the Second Coming-is carefully scored and compared.

The results are striking: the Composite Purpose hypothesis emerges as the most compelling, integrating all dimensions into a unified divine act. The Transfiguration simultaneously reveals Jesus' divine glory, equips the disciples for suffering, fulfills Kingdom promises, confirms prophetic witness, and offers a foretaste of future glory. This multifaceted reading honors the Synoptic accounts' language, structure, and historical setting while avoiding reductionist interpretations.

Through detailed chapters, Anderson examines:

• Lexical and narrative presentation - the Greek term metamorphoō and the vivid imagery of transformation.

• Literary structure - the event's placement between Passion predictions and the journey to Jerusalem.

• Historical and cultural correspondence - Second Temple Jewish expectations and Old Testament theophanies.

• Canonical theology - how the event fits within salvation history and messianic revelation.

• Symbolic coherence - the interplay of glory, suffering, and eschatological hope.

Tables, scoring summaries, and accessible explanations make this rigorous analysis approachable for scholars, pastors, and serious students of Scripture. The book demonstrates that the Transfiguration is not a single-purpose event but a richly layered revelation that bridges Christ's earthly ministry, his coming Passion, and the glory of the Kingdom.

Why Was Jesus Transfigured? equips readers to evaluate the evidence themselves and rediscover the wonder of Scripture's message: on the mountain, God revealed His Son in glory, preparing His people for the cross and the age to come.

Perfect for those interested in biblical studies, Christology, Second_Temple_Judaism, and eschatology, this book offers a transparent, text-driven framework for one of the New Testament's most majestic revelations.
