Why Was Jonah Swallowed by the Great Fish?: A Rubric-Based Evaluation of the Biblical Evidence (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798185080177)

Why does the Book of Jonah describe a prophet swallowed by a divinely appointed "great fish"-and what actually happened in that mysterious three-day descent into the depths? This groundbreaking study by biblical scholar P. C. Anderson offers the most comprehensive, text-driven evaluation of the famous episode ever published, using a nine-variable rubric to test every major responsible interpretation against the biblical evidence.

Drawing directly from Jonah 1:17-2:10, the book's literary structure, ancient Near Eastern background, canonical theology, and intertextual patterns, Anderson evaluates five leading hypotheses: - Composite Historical-Symbolic Event - Literal Miracle - Prophetic Sign - Historical Event with Natural Mechanism - Parabolic Narrative

Across eleven chapters, Anderson demonstrates how Jonah's experience functions simultaneously as divine discipline, miraculous deliverance, narrative turning point, and Christ-foreshadowing sign. The study shows how the great fish fits ancient sea imagery, Hebrew narrative artistry, and the book's central message: God sovereignly pursues, rescues, and recommissions His servant-and extends mercy even to Israel's enemies.

Readers will discover:

- How the Hebrew terms dāg gādôl ("great fish") and mānâ ("appointed") shape the passage's meaning. - Why Jonah's prayer from "the belly of Sheol" reveals both historical distress and theological symbolism. - How the fish episode anchors the book's literary structure and prepares for Nineveh's repentance. - How ancient Near Eastern sea motifs illuminate the story without reducing it to myth. - Why Jesus identifies Jonah's three days and nights as a prophetic sign of His own resurrection. - How the event's pastoral function-discipline, deliverance, renewed mission-still speaks powerfully today.

Accessible tables, scoring summaries, and clear explanations make this volume ideal for pastors, teachers, students, and thoughtful lay readers. Anderson's method avoids speculative extremes and honors the biblical text on its own terms, showing how the narrative's historical realism and symbolic richness converge into a unified, compelling portrait.

Why Was Jonah Swallowed by the Great Fish? invites readers to rediscover the wonder of a God who appoints even the creatures of the sea to accomplish His purposes-and whose mercy reaches farther than Jonah ever imagined.
