William Crawford Gorgas: His Life and Work (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781026087121)

"William Crawford Gorgas His Life and Work" provides a comprehensive and intimate biographical account of one of the most influential figures in the history of international public health. Written by Marie D. Gorgas and the acclaimed biographer Burton J. Hendrick, this narrative follows the remarkable career of General William Crawford Gorgas, whose scientific vision and persistence fundamentally changed the world's approach to tropical diseases.

The work focuses heavily on Gorgas's revolutionary achievements in sanitation and disease control. It chronicles his landmark successes in eradicating yellow fever in Havana and, most notably, his essential role in the construction of the Panama Canal. By conquering the mosquito-borne illnesses of malaria and yellow fever that had previously thwarted all attempts to bridge the isthmus, Gorgas enabled one of the greatest engineering feats of the modern age. Through detailed personal accounts and historical analysis, the book portrays his transition from a young Army physician to the Surgeon General of the United States. "William Crawford Gorgas His Life and Work" is a vital record of medical triumph and humanitarian service, offering a deep look into the life of a man whose dedication to sanitation and preventive medicine saved countless lives across the globe.
