She received her bachelor's degree in French from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she later earned her doctorate in mathematics. A native of Oklahoma, she lived in San Francisco, Seattle, Paris, Rome, Rio de Janeiro and Chicago before settling happily in Tucson.
