Winnetka Graded Book List (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781026088258)

"Winnetka Graded Book List" is a pioneering study in the field of children's literature and educational psychology. Compiled by Carleton Washburne and the staff of the Winnetka Public Schools, this comprehensive resource was developed to bridge the gap between children's reading abilities and their actual interests. Unlike traditional reading lists of its time, which were often based on adult preferences or pedagogical theories, this work was the result of extensive research involving thousands of children who rated and commented on the books they read.

The list categorizes hundreds of titles by school grade level and provides insight into why specific books appeal to different age groups. It serves as an invaluable historical document for educators, librarians, and historians of education, offering a detailed look at the reading habits of the early 20th century. By analyzing the correlation between a child's reading age and the difficulty of the text, Washburne established a scientific approach to book selection that influenced library science and curriculum development for decades. Whether used for historical research or as a guide to classic children's stories, "Winnetka Graded Book List" remains a foundational text in understanding the development of literacy and the importance of student-centered learning.
