Wishram Ethnography (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781026091302)

"Wishram Ethnography" is a seminal anthropological study documenting the cultural, social, and linguistic heritage of the Wishram people, a Chinookan-speaking tribe traditionally residing along the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest. Authored by esteemed scholars Edward Sapir and Leslie Spier, this work represents a vital record of indigenous life and tradition during a transformative era in American history.

The volume provides a comprehensive analysis of various aspects of Wishram life, including social organization, religious practices, myths, and material culture. Through meticulous fieldwork and linguistic expertise, Sapir and Spier explore the complex relationships between tribal members, their environment, and neighboring groups. The text delves into the economic foundations of the community, highlighting the importance of the Columbia River salmon fisheries and the intricate trade networks that characterized the region.

As a foundational text in North American ethnology, "Wishram Ethnography" remains an essential resource for researchers, historians, and students of Native American studies. It captures the nuances of a unique cultural identity, preserving oral traditions and social structures that are fundamental to understanding the history of the Pacific Northwest and the resilience of its indigenous peoples.
