Witches of the Red Sky (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781970587531)

Witches of the Red Sky is World War II fiction, WWII historical fiction, and Eastern Front fiction told through the lives of Soviet women pilots, Red Army tank crews, and two people drawn together inside the machinery of war.

Olga Zhuravets is a Yak-9 pilot in the 194th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, one of the Soviet women the Germans have begun to fear as the Red Witches. She knows how to fly low over guns, trucks, rail lines, and retreating columns. She knows how to hold formation when the sky fills with flak and German fighters. She knows how quickly a good pilot can become a burning mark on the ground.

Lieutenant Mikhail Buzulukov, known to his men as Volk, commands a battered Soviet tank platoon pushing through mud, mines, artillery, and counterattacks. His crew trusts him because he does not spend their lives carelessly. Kravchuk, Verbik, Hladkyi, and Lutsenko know the sound of a German gun finding range. They know the smell of fuel, hot steel, cordite, and men who have been too long inside a tank. They know Volk will get them forward if forward can still be reached.

Olga and Mikhail should never have become more than voices across a battlefield.

She belongs to the air.

He belongs to the ground.

But war does not respect these lines. Her fighter clears the road his tanks must take. His platoon marks targets her regiment must destroy. Each mission draws them closer through maps, radio calls, brief meetings, and the knowledge that one wrong decision from either of them can kill the other.

As the Red Army drives the Germans west, the fighting becomes more personal. The Luftwaffe hunts the Soviet advance from above. German guns hold villages, crossings, and road junctions until they are burned out or overrun. Soviet commanders demand speed. Mechanics work through frozen nights. Tank crews sleep beside machines that may become their graves by morning. Fighter pilots return with holes in their wings and names missing from the benches beside them.

For Olga, love is not softness. It is danger. It sharpens her judgment and threatens it at the same time. Every time Mikhail's tanks move under fire, she must decide whether to fly the mission she was ordered to fly or protect the man she cannot afford to lose.

For Mikhail, command means choosing who risks death first. Loving Olga does not make that burden easier. It makes every smoke column, every radio failure, every empty patch of sky feel like a message he may not survive long enough to understand.

Together, they become part of the same battle system: Yak fighter above, T-34 platoon below, each covering the other through a war that punishes hesitation and mercy alike.

From Ukrainian river lines and ruined villages to fighter strips carved from mud and tank routes marked by smoke, Witches of the Red Sky blends military fiction, Soviet aviation, armored warfare, and wartime romance into a story of duty, desire, survival, and the cost of caring when every choice costs lives.

Written for readers of World War II fiction, WWII historical fiction, Eastern Front fiction, stories about Soviet women pilots, women fighter pilots, wartime romance, and combat-driven military fiction, Witches of the Red Sky is a love story built inside the machinery of war, where courage is measured in seconds, loyalty is tested under fire, and the heart may be the most dangerous thing a soldier carries.
