When a close friend of the mayor, billionaire Richard Brogan, is found dead by apparent suicide on the same morning as the mayor and the murder weapon used on the mayor bears Brogan's print, the Police Commissioner is too quick to want the investigation wrapped up. Horgan pushes back and wishes to continue the investigation but is removed from it. Frank Tartt, feeling isolated and alone, befriends Horgan and nudges him to continue with the investigation which will put Horgan at great peril. The story flips back and forth between first person narrative of Frank, where we are able to get inside his head as he tries to hold onto his sanity and limited third person narration. This is a suspense story that explores both faith and corruption.
