Everyone from labourers to lords, milk-maids to marchionesses, read poetry and large numbers of people also wrote it. The daily newspapers and monthly periodicals, growing rapidly in readership and significance during this time, groaned under the weight of vast amounts of verse, and were often happy to usher relative unknowns into print. Women played an important role in this diverse and popular writing community—some of the most prominent and popular poets of the period were women. But the "great forgetting" of the work of female poets that began in the Victorian period and continued until the emergence of feminist Romanticism in the 1990s, rendered Romantic women poets largely invisible for much of the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries. xClaire Knowles, Associate Professor, La Trobe University Claire Knowles is Associate Professor of English at La Trobe University, Melbourne. Her books include Della Cruscan Poetry, Women, and the Fashionable Newspaper (2023) and Sensibility and Female Poetic Tradition, 1780-1860: The Legacy of Charlotte Smith (2009). Knowles also co-authored Charlotte Smith: Major Poetic Works (2017) with Ingrid Horrocks. Her research focuses on women writers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and on the intersection between Romanticism and emergent forms of popular literary culture.
