Writing You (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798340652751)

Experiencing a break up is like experiencing a death-at least if you are the one who gets dumped.

But it's a unique death.

Your loved one isn't gone because of natural causes or tragic events. Instead, your person chose not to be with you. You feel the loss of death, but it is coupled with rejection. And if you had no idea the breakup was coming, your sense of abandonment is catastrophic. In my particular long-distance situation, I went from the usual WhatsApp good night conversation to a break up the next morning-an abrupt discard followed by no contact.

There's nothing you can do about it. There's nothing anyone can say. Crying helps a little. And I'm told that time will help a lot. But that takes too damn long. Underneath the weight of my grief, I had to write. As an English teacher, I've dabbled in writing for years, but I never would have considered myself a poet until now. Writing poetry kept me alive, gave me a chance to confront my feelings, and allowed me to say what I needed to when he was no longer listening. I don't know if my rhymes will resonate with anyone, but if they do, it may be there's a reason for-or at least a silver lining to-the death that somehow stopped my heart but not my life.
