Xìn Xīn Ming: Trust Mind Inscription (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798246820056)

The Xin Xin Ming / Shinjinmei is one of the most foundational and earliest documents of the Chan (Zen) Buddhist tradition. Attributed to the Third Patriarch Sengcan, these verses serve as a definitive roadmap to non-dual realization.

Unlike many contemporary editions that favor poetic paraphrase or interpretive license, this translation adheres to a principle of absolute formal fidelity. Every line has been rendered with a strict focus on:

• Grammatical Precision: Distinguishing between verbal and existential negators (不 vs. 無) and preserving the stark, juxtapositional syntax of Classical Chinese.

• Etymological Accuracy: Returning to the root meanings of key technical terms such as Tathātā (Suchness), Dharmadhātu (Dharma Realm), and Vipaśyanā (Contemplation).

• Non-Interventionist Methodology: The main text remains an extremely faithful transmission of the source material. Explanatory comments are relegated to footnotes, ensuring the reader encounters the text in its original, uncompromising power.

• Scholarly Apparatus: Detailed footnotes for every couplet, justifying word choices through etymology and historical usage.

• Lexical Consistency: A rigorous adherence to a technical lexicon, ensuring that philosophical keywords retain their specific meaning throughout the entire arc of the poem.

• Uninterpreted Verse: A main text that works in English without straying from the core Chinese grammar, providing a clean "source-to-target" experience.

For the scholar, the dedicated practitioner of the Way, and the student of Classical Chinese, this edition offers a rare opportunity to engage with the Xinxinming as a precise metaphysical instrument.
