She directed the National Study Commission on Defense Services, which developed national standards for public defender and appointed counsel systems. She also served as a public defender and private criminal defense lawyer, and as an Assistant Illinois Attorney General. As an adjunct professor, she taught a variety of law school and college classes on criminal justice. As a prelude to writing this book, she wrote a monthly subscription publication for law enforcement officers designed to inform them about evolving court mandates governing police-citizen interactions and the individual rights of citizens. Her published work includes numerous articles on criminal justice and several books, including Guide to Establishing a Defender System.
