Maria Tzimas, born in war-ravaged Greece, in December 1942, in the small village of Preveza. Her continuing crippled condition forced her to seek medical aid in the United States, and, at the age of 21, after the final two operations at Midtown Hospital, New York, she was able to walk with some greater freedom (without crutches), but still with a cane.

Love and marriage prompted her return to Greece. However, the dictatorship prohibited the sale of any of her writings. The dubious distinction of being the only Greek authoress to receive a decree of prohibition from the Greek government forced her and her family back to the United States in the hope that her talent would find fulfillment there.
