The author and illustrator of this story, Bella Vry, initially created this book as a fifteen-year-old student for a class project. She spent many months writing the story and drawing the illustrations. When Bella finally presented her story to teachers, fellow students, and their parents, they reacted with a touching enthusiasm begging her to publish it so that they could buy a copy.

As Bella's mom, Becca Vry, witnessed their reactions and listened to their questions during Bella's presentation of her project, she was struck by the complex questions and observations the children made following the reading of the story. Realizing how many "teaching moments" existed as the children's questions unfolded in the post-project discussion after the presentation, Becca grew inspired to compose a study guide based on the children's reactions and the ten IB attributes encouraging all learners to become: balanced, caring, communicators, inquirers, knowledgeable, open-minded, principled, risk-takers, thinkers and reflective.
